Thong Bikini

A little history

It is believed that the design of this skimpy and sexy beach clothing was inspired by the traditional costumes of Brazil’s Amazonian tribes.  These fashionable beach clothing are also from sexy swimwear fashion in Brazil’s beaches.  They were introduced in the 1970s by a fashion designer named Rudi Gernreich.  Gernreich is also credited for the monokini or topless bathing suit.  He first created the monokini, which is composed of regular bottoms with strings or straps that hung on the shoulders to hold them in place.  He also created the pubikini, which has a hole or window on the crotch area to reveal the woman’s pubic hair.

The success and popularity of Gernreich’s monokini or topless swimsuits were short lived.  With this, he experimented on bottomless swimsuits.  He conceptualized and designed the thong style beachwear, drawing inspiration from the American’s fascination of the buttocks and the upper thighs.

Varieties

Gernreich’s invention was originally available in three styles: a two-piece bikini, a one-piece swimsuit with a tank top, and the more controversial topless style with bottoms made of just thin straps of fabric.

Today, these popular bathing suits are available in many other styles.  There are G-string, V-strings, T-back style, C-strings, dance belt designs, cheeky style swimsuits, and string tangas.  They come in various fabrics and materials.  Among them are latex, silk, cotton, fleece, nylon, satin, and spandex or lycra.
